Limestone Everywhere

This morning we lucked out and woke up to beautiful weather. We decided that it would be a nice day to go up north off of Phuket island to Phang Nga Bay. It is basically an archipelago with an ample amount of limestone cliffs.

I am guessing most of the tourists who visit this area pay for a tour of the Phang Nga province, while Elisabeth and I just jumped on a motorbike and started riding in that general direction, hoping to find it. Of course we got lost for a little while, but we quickly got back on track and found several signs leading us to the area. The motorbike ride took us nearly an hour, and that is not too comfortable on the caboose.

A sign pointed us off the highway, and once in this small neighborhood, we saw zero tourists. Every single Thai that saw us drive by laughed and waved jubilantly. After following another sign leading us down a narrow dirt road, we arrived at a river’s edge. We saw a medium-sized wooden boat, but no one was to be found. After a few minutes, a motorbike pulled out from the dirt road behind us. A young Thai man cut the motor on the bike and proceeded to tell us that a boat ride out into Phang Nga bay was 1300 baht. Thinking about the long motorbike ride over here, we decided to get on the boat and pay the man, and not make the whole trip a waste. For some reason I forgot that I could probably talk this guy down in price drastically.

The ride was very long, taking us throughout a good portion of the bay. The main attraction was James Bond Island, an island where “The Man With the Golden Gun” was filmed. We were asked to pay another 200 baht if we wanted to get out and walk around on the beach, but my wallet was already aching from the 1300 I just dished out for the ride, so we decided to just see it from the boat.

The ride back to Patong Beach was long and hectic, since half of the ride was in the dark and through the crazy nightlife traffic.
